Each step in a pattern can be turned into a number by counting something in the pattern, such as matchsticks or shapes. Turning patterns into numbers helps you see how the pattern is changing more clearly.
Look at each step of the pattern and decide what you are counting. Then count the amount in each step and write the numbers in order. This creates a number sequence that matches the pattern.
Once you have the numbers, look at how they change from one term to the next. Spot the rule, such as “add 2 each time.” Use this rule to find the next number in the sequence, which tells you what the next pattern would look like.
